Recycled Air Bags

Recycled airbag is one that has never been deployed and that has been resold by a recycling firm or car parts dealer.  According to the Automotive Recyclers Association, recycled airbags, when professionally evaluated, handled, shipped and installed, can serve as viable, economical and safe alternatives to the use of new, costly OEM airbags.

However, there are inherent risks of using recycled air bags. For one, air bags that have been salvaged from flooded cars should not be used in recycling.  Otherwise, as long as they have been properly stored and handled, recycled air bags do serve a reasonable purpose.

 Tips for Recycled Air Bags

  • When having a new air bag installed, ask for the sales documentation that proves it is not stolen, such as receipts or shipping information.

  • Genuine air bags will usually match in color, and will not be painted.

  • Aftermarket or imitation replacement air bags are not the same standard and quality as original equipment manufacturer parts.

  • When replacing an air bag, your shop should also strongly consider replacing any piece involved in the accident.  Not replacing parts involved can impair the future function of your air bags.

  • Have your air bags inspected after accidents.

  • Make sure your replacement air bag is not a "fake air bag"
